Are You Properly Taking Care of Your Clothes?

5 Things We Should All Be Doing

We all know that overtime our clothes fade, and the materials wear out. What if I told you that there's a way you can keep your clothes for much longer? With the proper care and concern, your clothes will last way longer than they used to. Here is a checklist of things that you should be doing in order to take proper care of your clothes and purchasing consciously to make sure your clothes last as long as possible.

Avoid washing your clothes as much as possible. Unless it's stained or smells unpleasant, it can be worn more than once. The more you wash your clothing, the worse their quality gets. Don't wear the same article of clothing more than 2-3 times a week, it will lose quality very quickly.

Depending on the fabric, tumble drying can be extremely risky to the shelf-life of your clothing. It can often damage the fibers in your clothing and discolor them. Elastic needs to relax. By machine drying your clothes, you're contributing to them losing quality. A better alternative is to air dry them outside. It's a lot more affordable and is more gentle on your clothing.

Ironing if done frequently, can cause damage to the quality of your clothing. Every time you iron something, you reduce the shine on your clothes. A lot of materials are not okay to iron, so to be safe steaming is always an alternative. If you don't own a steamer, you can hang them in the bathroom while taking a shower.

Purchasing quality clothing doesn't need to be expensive. There are plenty of affordable and ethical brands that carry quality clothing that will last you a lot longer than clothing from a fast fashion company. It is better to invest in few good quality staple pieces, rather than spending the same amount on a lot of cheap and synthetic pieces. This way, your clothing will last a lot longer.

Learning basic repairs on clothing will seriously save you a pretty penny. Usually if it's just a quick fix, it will keep your clothes going a lot longer. Even when being careful, it's really easy to pop a button or rip a seam. This way, instead of throwing your clothes away, you're still able to wear them and learn some new skills while in the process.
